Gursky Family

Our Beginnings

The Gursky family has been involved in agriculture for four generations. Roy’s grandfather, Nathan, and his dad, Ephraim, formed the original “Gursky and Son” with a dairy on Empire Mine Road in Antioch and farmed land on Orwood Island in the Delta. The dairy grew into a feedlot and the business became “Gursky and Sons” when Roy and his brother Barry graduated from agricultural management programs at Cal Poly and Davis and brought their wives to the ranch to begin our families in 1968. Unfortunately, the cattle market declined and in 1975 we lost the ranch and moved into Brentwood finding other employment and starting over.

Gursky Ranch

Seeking to get back to our farming roots, we moved with our two young sons, two cats and a dog back out to the country and into our new home on a walnut ranch. We didn’t know much about growing walnuts, or marketing them, but with help from farmer friends, consultation from UC Davis and other authorities, we soon were educated about how to grow and manage our crop. We started out by marketing our first crop from our garage in 1980.

Over the years, we had many requests for additional products which created the need to expand and improve our store. We now offer a huge assortment of dried fruits, nuts, candies, gourmet items and gift baskets. We have over 300 items now, including one of the largest assortments of food gifts in East County. While we were busy expanding our product line, Brentwood was busy expanding our city. In 2004, most of our neighbors optioned their property for sale and we had a decision to make…we chose a compromise, selling some acreage and keeping some for u-pick walnuts. We are now the “Neighborhood Gourmet”…a little piece of country surrounded by housing developments. Sadly we lost Roy to cancer in 2009, but with the help of son Steve and his wife, Sarah, Lynn is keeping the store and ranch up and running.

Community Involvment

The Gursky family has always been involved in our community. Grandpa Nathan participated in horse drawn co-op harvesting with many of the old farm families who dry cropped grain on the hills. Dad Eph was an active member of Brentwood Lions Club for many years. Roy was a fire commissioner, school board member, chamber director, and Harvest Time board member. Son Nathan has moved back to Brentwood, and with his wife, Denise, plants and harvests vegetables in the Ranch garden. Lynn, Steve and Sarah carry on the tradition with involvement in Soroptimists, Rotary, Relay for Life, Harvest Time, Operation Creekside troop packing, and donate to a variety of local organizations. We are grateful to live in a wonderful community like Brentwood and believe it is important to give back.
